So this week in class we have been discussing the topic of social class and culture. It is interesting how we classify individuals. Why is it that we classify others by their clothes, looks, education, money, jobs, cars, and homes? What is it that makes us judge others by just looking at them? To me it is not fair to the individual to judge them on such items, because those items really do not matter. What matters is the person they are, or are becoming. It is what is inside that should be looked at. We may miss out on some wonderful opportunities to make great friends because we judge the by the class society puts them. I remember having friends of diverse classes and I learned valuable information from each one, and what a shame it would be if I dismissed them because of their different class system. We cannot judge others from the things they may or may not have because we do not understand the situation they are currently dealing with. It is an individual’s ethics and values that should be considered. I think what really makes an individual high class is how they treat the stranger they meet and focusing on others instead of themselves. What is high class anyhow, and how will it really benefit you in the long run? What will it give you in life besides greed and pride? What matters are the relationships that you build with others, and discovering gifts you have and developing them, and then sharing them with everyone around you. This is what I want to be remembered for. It are those who make a difference like Mother Teresa who are really remembered long after their gone, and not those who achieve being the richest or all those worldly attributes.
Another topic that intrigued me is what matters more to us our culture or our values. We live in a society now that is so diverse and mixed with so many cultures that is hard not to date or become close friends with those of a different ethnic or culture. So will we allow the issues of different cultures stop us from getting to know someone, and the possibility of marrying them? I would hope not. It is then that we would have to look at what matters more to us the different cultures or our values. Values are what should matter to us the most and the difference in cultures will be fun. It gives one a chance to expand what they know and to experience something new and exciting. I would find it exciting to marry someone of a different culture, because of the new traditions it would bring and the ability to allow my children to be more diverse. So let us not be afraid of the difference in cultures embrace it and allow yourself to experience something different.
